Kebri Dehar University (KDU) is one of the fourth-generation public and autonomous higher education institutions (HEIs) in Ethiopia. Established in the 2015 academic year with proclamation No. 354/2015, it enrolled 720 regular students as the first batch in four faculties or colleges (Faculty of Dryland Agriculture, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Natural and Computational Science, and Faculty of Social Science and Humanities) in 14 different undergraduate academic programs with 45 teachers and 68 administrative support staff operating with limited facilities. Currently, there are eight colleges, 32 undergraduate programs, 15 postgraduate programs, and eleven directorates under the ARVP office.

The major duties and responsibilities of the ARVP Office

The Office of the Academic and Research Affairs Vice President is accountable to the President with responsibilities for leading, coordinating, and facilitating the university’s academic and research affairs. The Vice President has leadership responsibilities for planning, implementing, supervising, monitoring, coordinating, and reporting the teaching, learning, research, and community service activities of the university. ARVP acts on behalf of the president in the event the latter is absent from his duty based on a higher education proclamation. In addition, the ARVP expects advising, supporting, and helping the President in carrying out his duties. He also performs any additional tasks that may be expressly delegated to him by the President, the university managing board, or the Senate. Assuming these duties, ARVP has a specific goals and leadership obligations mentioned below to

  • Lead, coordinate, and oversee responsibilities for development and management of graduate and undergraduate academic programs, continuing and distance education, teaching and learning support, staff affairs, office of the registrar, library, and academic standards and quality enhancement.

  • Provide leadership in establishing academic priorities, plans for program development, faculty recruitment and development.

  • Responsible for managing the academic, research, community service and technology transfer enterprise.

  • Closely work with the President to assist in and provide support on academic and research affairs, and with other Vice President (ADVP) to set the University’s broad academic directions/vision, priorities, and policies.

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of plans, policies, rules, and guidelines governing academic programs, academic and technical staff, and students.

  • Facilitate the accomplishment of the University’s mission and its academic and research goals through the establishment of programs, policies, procedures, and standards; in selection, evaluation, and development of faculty and staff; in review of academic programs, research, and community service projects; in allocation of funds; and in provision of information.

  • Ensure the employment and promotion of academic and research staff is consistent with the University’s rules and procedures.

  • Coordinate and set context for the University’s various colleges, programs, and services to maintain a broad and coherent institutional perspective.

  • Develop and implement the institutional-level planning initiatives that are essential to the strategic positioning of the University.

  • Coordinate periodic academic program reviews and work with academic units in the review, study, and development of curriculum and in the improvement of instruction.

  • Establish and facilitate collaboration with industries and other institutions in pursuit of the University’s mission.

  • Support and ensure the programs of study; prepare and supply qualified graduates in knowledge, skills, and attitudes because of the existing needs of the country.

  • Ensure the University’s strategic and operational plans are in place for colleges and reporting units, monitoring, and supporting best practices, monitoring performances, and promoting positive relations internally and externally.
